Spoiled, entitled, those are expectations that we believe we deserve in life!
This morning I woke up to no electricity! My morning was taking on a change that I had no control over. My first reaction was to look outside to verify the power outage was not a personal lapse on not paying our bill. With that confirmed I called Ohio Edison to report the outage.
It wasn’t so much that I didn’t have lights, I was enjoying the light filtering in from my windows. Although I typically turn on either Good Morning America or HGTV to keep me company in the background I was OK with the silence. However, the fan on our furnace wasn’t running, and the condo felt icy cold, that was starting to affect me. But most of all I could not make my coffee, my much-needed lifeline.
This stopped me in my tracks, and I thought about others less fortunate than I. What about those who may not be waking up in a home, those that are homeless or are wandering from family to friend to shelters? There are those that may have a roof over their heads but may not have heat or electricity because they cannot afford to pay the bill.
We are all unique individuals, and we get to our places in life by traveling the path we select to take. Sometimes that path is right, and it leads us to even bigger and better adventures allowing us to grow and expand our wings. We get to choose what is important and what is not. However, some take their journey and never get off the straight and narrow, and it leads to nowhere, and they wonder why they are stuck. Being stuck is a state of mind. It is up to each of us to open our minds to all positive ideas becoming the solutions that will enhance our life while not destroy another.
I may be spoiled, and my expectations may be to have a roof over my head with heat and electricity. However, my expectations are to work to provide for them and to seek out solutions to keep my family and me not just comfortable but maintaining life and sharing our inner love with others.
In the past, I would have felt angry, frustrated and overwhelmed waking up to this minor inconvenience this morning. However, the anger, frustration and allowing myself to blow my brain up with overwhelming feelings would not have done me or anyone else any good. The power would not have returned any sooner. In fact, within minutes after I called the power returned. Whether by coincidence or my call initiating it, life is back to a somewhat normal state.
This morning I could not and did not take my usual journey. I took a detour and made a call. While considering the call, I chose to accept the situation and wait it out in a calm and relaxing mode (even without my beloved cup of coffee.) That call or something else changed the tide, and it was like someone yelled, “Let there be power,” and there was power. I now feel empowered that I have the energy to survive. I am not spoiled, entitled or deserving. I am living life loudly. Join my journey and follow Alex as he continues to live loudly too….

Lou Kraus and his organization, “Better Outcomes,” join our podcast as of April 6, 2016. Lou began this organization to bring communities together to learn to speak civilly and in a proper manner with the assistance of a mediator to bring about solutions rather than create resolutions that fall flat on the floor that we grind into the ground. I see this format being used in daily life as we escape behind texting and emailing that the words we use are creating a war that is growing and sparking continued anger in our communities.
